    • Material modelling: thermodynamically consistent modelling of phenomena such as damage, plasticity, solid state phase transformations and temperature evolution in materials of technological interest within the geometrically nonlinear framework of generalised standard materials and beyond, including the embedding in FEA software
    • Multi-scale modeling/homogenisation: development of numerical frameworks for the microstructure simulation and homogenisation of high-resolution material models in the transition from nano/micro to meso/macro scale, e.g. by utilisation of the microsphere/microplane approach for the multi-scale modeling of anisotropic solids
    • Multi-field/coupled problems: formulation and efficient, monolithic numerical solution of multi-field problems, e.g. in the context of full thermomechanical coupling, gradient-enhanced damage formulations, or formally related problems
    • Inverse problems/optimisation: adaptation of methods of non-linear programming, including methods of different order in connection with active set and penalty strategies for constrained optimisation with application e.g. in the context of DIC-based parameter identification
    • Machine learning: adaptation of machine learning methods, specifically artificial neural networks, i.e. feedforward ANNs such as multilayer perceptrons and recurrent ANNs like LSTM, to problems in engineering mechanics, especially in the area of inverse problems
