In order to solve problems in engineering, they usually have to be translated into a mathematical model. Usually this results in a system of e.g. nonlinear equations or differential equations which have to be solved. Sometimes, however, an analytical solution is not possible, or a manual solution is too time-consuming. In such cases, numerical methods must be used to efficiently determine a solution and thus to be able to describe complex systems well and accurately.
In the lecture, the basics of the most important numerical methods are explained in detail. Participants get a deeper insight into the function of the commonly used methods, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the respective limits of applicability. After successful completion of the course, you will be able to solve complex problems independently and efficiently, to critically analyze solutions and approaches, and to make appropriate decisions when choosing or evaluating methods. The contents of the course cover the following points:
Cycle: Winter semester
The module consists of a weekly lecture and a weekly tutorial. The tutorial will take place as a programming exercise in the CIP pool. The details about concrete times and rooms, as well as all further information, can be found in the Moodle course.
The examination consists of a student project with presentation and oral examination.
